I am a retired Yorkshire architect who thirty or so years ago travelled to Lincolnshire with my son, then about 12, to pursue our family tree. And upon calling in at Carlton le Morland church, having just discovered an ancestor married there, WE BOTH saw seven or eight rows of roman letters, each about 4'' in height and extending twelve or so feet across grass, a gravel path and four or so feet up the wall of the church tower. This was in perfect daylight and with neither trees and foliage to cast shadows nor a church clock presenting the possibility of reflections from the usual roman numerals.
A sight neither of us has ever forgotten and having never having heard of anything similar, wondered whether anyone has seen anything similar or can suggest why it might have occured to us.
Thank you.
Mac.
